What are Things in My World Made of?

When you have a bag of "things" and need to group them, how do you do it?  Do you group them by size? Color?  Weight?  "Stuff" they are made of?

We are learning that "things"= "objects," and "stuff" = "materials"

January Update

Hello everyone!

Here's an update on what's happening in our classroom as of late:

Math: We have just wrapped up a short review unit on subtraction and conceptual place value concepts. Our next math unit will be expanding our students' knowledge of place value with some new concepts and review of some familiar ones. We will begin the new unit on Monday; there is no formal assessment for the short unit just completed.  The previous unit was on measurement and area. Our assessment was sent home this past week on these goals: I can measure to the nearest half or fourth of an inch; I can draw a rectangle with a specific area and perimeter; I can find the perimeter of a shape.

Writing: Last week we started our new writing unit on Informational Writing. Students will be constructing writing pieces on a subject they are an expert at. Feel free to talk to your child at home about what topics he or she might pick and encourage him or her to look for all the areas in his or her life where they could be considered a child expert.

Read-Aloud: We are in the middle of our current read-aloud, Wonder by R. J. Palacio. It is a realistic fiction story about judging (or not judging) a book (a boy) by its cover (face). It runs the gamut of emotions including laughing out loud and possibly shedding a few tears.  It is an amazing story about kindness and empathy and I enthusiastically suggest you check it out as a quick read for yourselves as well… it is one of my favorites!

Social Studies/Reading: We are currently learning the history and culture of the Wampanoag Native Americans in reading. This combined reading--social studies unit will run into February. Our students will be learning critical reading and thinking skills as well as Wampanoag traditions and history. Throughout the unit our students will have an opportunity to work in leveled groups, mixed groups, and independently.

If you have any concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. Thanks again for all you do!
